Reimagining cities through young women’s voices – Center of Gender Culture
Through its Inclusive Reconstruction project, the Center of Gender Culture engaged young women in shaping conversations about the future of Kharkiv. Using feminist urbanism and the HerCity methodology, participants conducted gender audits of public spaces, mapped safety concerns, developed proposals for a more inclusive city, and presented their ideas directly to local authorities. Alongside these activities, the project also invested in the wellbeing of the organisation’s team, helping strengthen its long-term resilience.
According to the Center of Gender Culture: "The idea behind this project was simple but powerful: if a public space is safe, comfortable, and accessible for girls and young women, it will be safe and accessible for everyone. In the context of post-war reconstruction, inclusive planning tools will be critically important because rebuilding should not only restore infrastructure but also create cities that foster social cohesion, participation, and psychological comfort.
“By involving girls and young women in gender audits, urban research, and idea development, we wanted them to become co-creators of their city rather than passive observers. Many young people today feel disconnected from their communities and uncertain about how they can influence local decisions. Through this project, participants were able to identify challenges, propose solutions, present their ideas publicly, and engage directly with city authorities. We also strengthened our own organisation by investing in staff wellbeing and resilience, ensuring that we can continue supporting communities while advancing gender equality and inclusive reconstruction in Kharkiv."
